Saturdays shifting away from the beach.

Saturdays shifting away from the beach.

A photo for the month.

A picture that sums up what this September has been for our family.

One only has to look at today’s date, the 11th, to realize how powerful one photograph can be.

A last trip of the summer to the beach left me with this image.

Sand and water and sky.

There were lots of photos with my loved one sitting in beach chairs enjoying good wine and food.

Like paper dolls, I could cut and paste images of my sister, my daughter, my mother and I into this background of the surf and water. Having conversations, eating a few too many chips and laughing at even the littlest of things as the evening wore on.

I like this empty vista. A beach set to tip toward fall. You can tell by looking at her, she is thinking that it is time to start slowing down and relax a bit after the bustle of the summer crowd — preparing for the raw of winter.

But I won’t chose that picture. I’ll select this one.

A few Saturdays ago, we went to see my son at college.

After the game, the players come back on the field and family and friends get to say hi.

My son passed me and walked out with his father. Then I saw his two siblings running after him. I grabbed my camera to get a photo — but I was running late, probably after messing around trying to get the perfect Instagram shot of the scoreboard. Good grief.

This is what I got.

It makes me happy.

oh visiting at college! my heart. I remember visiting my brothers at college, they seemed so OLD. Can’t even picture visiting my sons. Sigh. Great picture (and of the beach, too.)

  2. Jamie Miles says:

That is a good point. They seemed excited about seeing him and it was fun to get to eat together after the game.

  3. Both are photos are wonderful, but I can see why you choose the second. Looks like a lovely moment.

I am totally longing to walk along the shores of that beach right now….

And someday, I’ll have a college moment too. When my eldest goes…a long time from now. I’m glad it’s a long time from now…

Okay, omg, that big brotherly hand on the shoulder of his little sibling —–> THAT’S SOME DAMN GOOD PARENTING that went into that gesture.
Thank GOD you got it on camera. (-:

  6. What an amazing picture! My favorite brother is 9 years younger than me and we have always had a special relationship. Something about the age difference, I think. I see that in this shot, too. I bet they look up to him and always will!

I love the picture of the beach, especially the colors of the sky. Like a perfect moment and place for solitude.

And I honestly can’t imagine how it would be like by the time my son gets to college. He’s only 2 now. So I’ll just enjoy this present moment, because I bet I’ll miss these times when college days swing by.

I bet the younger kids think he is a pretty amazing super hero, don’t they? I remember being the kid at home when my older sisters both went to college. I anticipated the times when I would get to see them every bit as much as I looked forward to Christmas.
So glad you got the time with him. I haven’t made it back to TX since taking my daughter a month ago. It will be another month. By then I will feel like I can’t stand another minute until it is time!

That is one amazing picture you got. Big brother and little brother together – I can only hope this for my boys one day.

Lovely photos and memories. A beautiful family.

  12. This is a perfect picture and memory for September. As the youngest of three, I have distinct memories of visiting my older siblings at college and being so excited to see them. Love the hand on the back of his younger sibling.

I love the way you wove the bitter with the sweet here, girl.

And yes, looking at the date, it seems wring to not slow down and capture something peaceful. I like your paper doll words – beautiful.

And visiting your son, seeing him with his dad, his sibs, looking for that perfect shot. Le sigh. We’re all so cut from the same cloth, aren’t we?

    Lovely post, friend.
